81. Bruciarsi – to burn oneself

A: Bruciarsi ha molti significati in italiano: puoi bruciarti toccando il forno, ma puoi anche bruciarti un’opportunità o bruciarti il cervello.

B: Bruciarti il cervello? Scusa ma cosa vuol dire?

A: Significa ‘logorarsi mentalmente fino a danneggiarsi, per eccesso di stress, pensieri o sostanze.’

B: Wow, non lo sapevo.

A: Bruciarsi has many meanings in Italian: you can burn yourself by touching the oven, but you can also ‘burn’ an opportunity or ‘burn’ your brain.

B: Burn your brain? Sorry, what does that mean?

A: It means: ‘to wear oneself out mentally to the point of damage, due to excessive stress, thoughts, or substances.’

B: Wow, I didn't know that.

82. Buttarsi – to throw oneself/to go for it

A: Cosa faccio la chiamo o no?

B: Buttati! Se non la chiami non saprai mai se vuole uscire con te!

A: What do I do? Should I call her or not?

B: Go for it! If you don't call her, you'll never know if she wants to go out with you!

83. Cacciarsi – to get oneself into (trouble)

A: Mi sono cacciato in un guaio.

B: Hai di nuovo parlato di politica con sconosciuti a una festa?

A: Mi conosci troppo bene...

A: I've gotten myself into trouble.

B: Did you talk politics with strangers at a party again?

A: You know me too well...

84. Calmarsi – to calm down

A: Calmati! Se parli così veloce non riesco a capire cosa è successo!

B: Siamo senza wifi!

A: E allora? Siamo in campeggio!

B: Stasera c’è l’ultimo episodio di Lost! Come faccio senza wifi?!

A: Ma non c’è una replica domani pomeriggio? Stai tranquilla, potrai vedere i tuoi cari John, Jack e Sawyer domani...

B: Ma perché parlo con te? Non puoi capire...

A: Calm down! If you talk so fast, I can't understand what happened!

B: There’s no Wi-Fi!

A: So? We're camping!

B: Tonight's the last episode of Lost! How am I supposed to manage without Wi-Fi?!

A: Isn't there a rerun tomorrow afternoon? Don't worry, you can see your dear John, Jack, and Sawyer tomorrow...

B: Why am I talking to you? You don't understand...

85. Cambiarsi – to change clothes

A: Durante la festa mi sono cambiata tre volte.

B: Wow! Hai indossato diversi abiti da sera?

A: No. Prima il mio cane mi ha sbavato sulla gonna, poi il mio gatto mi ha vomitato sulle gambe e alla fine il mio coniglietto aveva fatto la cacca dove mi sono seduta.

B: Wow... un vero film dell’orrore!

A: I changed my clothes three times during the party.

B: Wow! Did you wear different evening dresses?

A: No. First my dog drooled on my skirt, then my cat vomited on my lap, and finally my bunny pooped where I sat.

B: Wow... a real horror movie!

86. Capirsi – to understand each other

A: Tu e Cristina siete molto affiatate.

B: Sì, ci capiamo al volo!

A: You and Cristina are very close.

B: Yes, we understand each other instantly!

87. Cavarsela – to get by

A: Allora come è andata col preside?

B: Me la sono cavata con poco. Dovrò aiutare per una settimana i giardinieri della scuola.

A: Scusa ma cosa hai fatto? Ancora non me l’hai detto.

B: Ho hackerato la radio della scuola per mettere musica rap.

A: Ahah, hai fatto bene, la musica che trasmettono è terribile.

B: Non dirlo a me. A volte mi sembra di ascoltare radio Maria.

A: So how did it go with the Principal?

B: I got off lightly. I'll have to help the school gardeners for a week.

A: What did you do? You still haven't told me.

B: I hacked the school radio to play rap music.

A: Haha, you did well, the music they play is terrible.

B: Tell me about it. Sometimes I feel like I'm listening to Radio Maria.

88. Celarsi – to hide oneself

Anna sta guardando la TV.

Presentatore: Chi si celerà dietro la porta della camera da letto? Scopritelo domani, stesso canale, stessa ora!

A: Ma perché continui a guardarti le soap opera?!

B: Mi piacciono tantissimo! Non sai mai cosa succede!

A: Te lo dico io chi c’è dietro la porta. Sarà l’ex marito di Brooke che si era sposato con la cugina e con la suocera, poi sembrava essere morto in un incidente ma si era salvato con il paracadute che aveva nel vano porta oggetti.

B: Ma cosa dici?! Saresti uno sceneggiatore terribile!

Anna is watching TV.

A: Why do you keep watching soap operas?!

B: I love them! You never know what's going to happen!

A: I'll tell you who's behind the door. It's probably Brooke's ex-husband, who married her cousin and her mother-in-law, then seemed to have died in an accident but was saved by the parachute he had in the glove compartment.

B: What are you talking about?! You'd be a terrible screenwriter!

89. Cibarsi – to feed on

A: I panda si cibano quasi esclusivamente di bambù e passano fino a 12 ore al giorno a mangiare.

B: Wow e io che pensavo che il mio gatto fosse ossessionato dal cibo!

A: Pandas feed almost exclusively on bamboo and spend up to 12 hours a day eating.

B: Wow, and I thought my cat was obsessed with food!

90. Chinarsi – to bend down

A: Quand’è l’ultima volta che hai pulito la tua camera?

B: Non so, la scorsa settimana?

A: Sei sicuro figlio mio?

B: Mamma, perché mi fai sempre le stesse domande? La mia camera è pulita!

A: Lo vedo... e come chiamerai il topolino che si stava mangiando il pezzo di torta incastrato sotto il tuo comodino?

A: When was the last time you cleaned your room?

B: I don't know, last week?

A: Are you sure, son?

B: Mom, why do you always ask me the same questions? My room is clean!

A: I see... and what are you going to name the little mouse that was eating the piece of cake stuck under your bedside table?
