41. Abbattersi – to get discouraged/to give up
A: In italiano esiste un proverbio o modo di dire che significa ‘mai abbattersi’?
B: Sì, per esempio, ‘finché c’è vita c’è speranza’.
A: Is there a proverb or saying in Italian that means 'never give up'?
B: Yes, for example, 'as long as there's life there's hope'.
42. Abbellirsi – to make oneself more beautiful/to become more attractive
A: Alcuni dei metodi suggeriti su internet per abbellirsi sono totalmente inutili e ridicoli.
B: Tipo?
A: La crema per le emorroidi per eliminare le occhiaie è una delle mie stupidaggini preferite.
B: Scusa ma come lo sai? Non è che l’hai provato?!
A: Ma va, l’avrò sentito dire a una festa!
B: Sì, sì... una festa...
A: Some of the methods suggested on the internet to become more attractive are completely useless and ridiculous.
B: Like?
A: Haemorrhoid cream to eliminate dark circles is one of my favourite ridiculous ideas.

43. Abbracciarsi – to hug each other
A: Quando i miei gatti si abbracciano sono come lo yin e lo yang.
B: Scusa ma chi sono Yin e Yang?
A: Ahah, spiritoso.
A: When my cats hug, they're like yin and yang.
B: And who are Yin and Yang?
A: Haha, very funny.
44. Abbronzarsi – to get a tan
A: Mi sono abbronzato in giardino.
B: Più che abbronzato sembri cotto. Se ti metto addosso un po’ d’olio, posso cuocermi un uovo.
A: I got a tan in the garden.
B: You look more cooked than tanned. If I put a bit of oil on you, I could cook an egg.
45. Accasciarsi – to collapse
A: Una delle scene che ricordo meglio di Via col Vento è Scarlett O’Hara che si accascia in modo drammatico sul suo letto.
B: Ah ecco da dove hai preso l’idea!
A: One of the scenes I remember best from Gone with the Wind is Scarlett O'Hara collapsing dramatically on her bed.
B: Oh, that's where you got that idea from!
46. Accigliarsi – to frown
A: Dimmi il nome di un personaggio di finzione che si acciglia sempre.
B: Facile! Severus Piton di Harry Potter!
A: Name a character who always frowns.
B: Easy! Severus Snape from Harry Potter!
47. Accomodarsi – to make oneself comfortable/to come on in
A: Accomodati pure!
B: Scusa ma puoi chiedere al tuo gatto e al tuo cane di spostarsi?
A: E perché mai?
B: Perché hanno i loro divani personali vicino alla finestra e qui non c’è abbastanza spazio per me.
A: Ma dai che sei magro e loro adorano sedersi vicino a te!
A: Come on in!
B: Um… can you ask your cat and dog to move?
A: Why?
B: Because they have their own sofas near the window, and there's not enough room for me here.
A: Come on, you're skinny, and they love sitting next to you!
48. Accontentarsi – to be content
A: Cosa ti metto sulla pizza?
B: Mi accontento di una pizza semplice. Mozzarella, pomodoro, prosciutto cotto, funghi, olive kalamata, gamberetti e un po’ di pollo.
B: Scusa, ma mi rifiuto. Che razza di pizza è mai questa?
A: What should I put on your pizza?
B: I'll settle for a simple pizza. Mozzarella, tomato, ham, mushrooms, Kalamata olives, prawns, and a bit of chicken.
B: Sorry, but I refuse. What kind of pizza is this?
49. Affacciarsi – to look out the window
A: Affacciati alla finestra amore mio!
B: Aspetta che poso il telefono. Non è che ti trovo sotto la finestra con un anello?
A: No, volevo solo che mi lanciassi le chiavi, ma se vuoi un anello posso comprarne uno al mercatino delle pulci in paese.
B: Come sei romantico...
A: Look out the window, my love!
B: Wait, I'll put the phone down. Will I find you under the window with a ring?
A: No, I just wanted you to throw me the keys, but if you want a ring, I can buy one at the flea market in town.
B: How romantic...
50. Affannarsi – to be out of breath
A: Ti sei affannato, eh amore mio?!
B: ...
A: Lo so, lo so, vieni qui che ti faccio le coccoline.
B: ...
C: Federica, quando la smetterai di parlare coi gatti? Tanto mica ti rispondono!
A: Mai dire mai!
A: You're out of breath, aren't you, my love?!

A: I know, I know, come here and I'll cuddle you.
