Innaffiare/annaffiare - to water

Ho molte piante grasse perché non è necessario innaffiarle spesso - I have a lot of succulents because they don't need to be watered often.


Inquinamento – pollution

Nelle grandi città, c’è troppo inquinamento. È importante avere più alberi e piante lungo le strade e all'interno degli edifici - In big cities, there is too much pollution. It is important to have more trees and plants along the streets and inside the buildings.


Imposta sul reddito – income tax

A: “A volte le imposte sul reddito favoriscono i miliardari

B: “A volte?!”

A: “Income Taxes sometimes favour billionaires.”

B: “Sometimes?!”


Infastidire – to bother

A: “Sei più fastidiosa di una zanzara.”

B: “E tu sei più fastidioso della correzione automatica quando cerco di scrivere in italiano!”

A: “Ok, sta volta vinci tu…”

A: “You’re more annoying than a mosquito.”

B: “And you’re more annoying than autocorrect when I try to write in Italian!”

A: “Okay, this time you win…”


Insegnamento – teaching

Gli insegnamenti di Buddha sono preziosi - Buddha's teachings are precious.


Insolito – unusual

È così insolito vedere Mario ordinare un’insalata che gli ho chiesto la carta di identità per assicurarmi che fosse proprio lui - It is so unusual to see Mario order a salad that I asked him for his ID to make sure it was really him.


Intraprendere - to undertake/to take

A: “Intraprendere il percorso della meditazione ti aiuterà a vivere meglio”

B: "Sì, ma solo se lo fai indossando un cappello da pirata e mangiando gelato alla menta."

A: “A volte mi preoccupo per te…”

A: “Taking the path of meditation will help you live better.”

B: “Yes, but only if you do it wearing a pirate hat and eating mint ice cream.”

A: “Sometimes I worry about you…”


Istruzione – education

Tutti i governi dovrebbero investire più soldi nell’istruzione - All governments should invest more money in education.


Inutile – useless

A: “Il tostapane dei selfie è una delle invenzioni più inutili della storia.”

B: “Scusa ma cos’è?”

A: “Un tostapane che imprime l'immagine del tuo viso sul pane tostato.”

B: “Ahah! Lo voglio!!!”

A: “The selfie toaster is one of the most useless inventions in history.”

B: “Sorry, but what is that?”

A: “A toaster that prints the image of your face on toast.”

B: “Haha! I want it!!!”


Ingenuo – naive

A: “Sei ingenua se credi che l’insalata piena di maionese dei fast food faccia bene alla salute”

B: “Non l’ho mai pensato…”

A: “E allora perché la compri?”

B: “Perché mi piace!”

A: “You’re naive if you think that mayonnaise-filled salad from fast food restaurants is good for your health.”

B: “I never thought so…”

A: “Then why do you buy it?”

B: “Because I like it!”


IVA – VAT

A: “Perché dobbiamo pagare l’IVA?”

B: “E che ne so, chiedilo al commercialista!”

A: “Why do we have to pay VAT?”

B: “What do I know, ask the accountant!”


Fare paracadutismo – to go skydiving

La persona più anziana ad aver fatto paracadutismo è Dorothy Hoffner, che ha stabilito il record a 104 anni - The oldest person to skydive is Dorothy Hoffner, who set the record at 104 years old.


Laurea triennale - Bachelor Degree

A: “Ha una laurea triennale in disegno futuristico.”

B: “Interessante!”

A: “He has a three-year degree in futuristic design.”

B: “Interesting!”


Laurea specialistica - Masters Degree

A: “Ha una laurea specialistica in Studio dei Meme”

B: “No vabbè, dai, questa te la sei inventata!”

A: “He has a master’s degree in Meme Studies”

B: “Come on, you just made that up!”
